RESEARCH ASSISTANT

 

Fixed term from 25 March 2024 to 25 June 2024

Contract type: Service contract (Werkvertrag)

Salary: negotiable

Hours: not to exceed 160 hours, to be worked according to the availability of the research assistant, and spread out in the weeks of work (about 13/20 hours a week)

Workplace: home-based

Main task

Support, through conducting interviews, empirical legal research in the field of migration law.

The post holder will support the project on missing migrants in the Central Mediterranean and address the practical issues of searching, identifying and burying missing migrants, in light of the current international and national legislative framework.

 

Specific duties and responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to

(1) Read background information on missing migrants in the Central Mediterranean sea and related Italian legislation (as provided by Katia Bianchini);

(2) undertake about 15 interviews of experts (NGOs, associations, institutions, lawyers, scholars) and, if accessible, of 10/15 families of missing migrants in person (probably in Milan, Rome, Apulia and Sicily) and/or online; if necessary because some more questions arise, follow up with the interviewees;

(3) transcribing interviews;

(4) Respect confidentiality: all confidential information should be kept in confidence and not released to unauthorised persons.

 

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

 

(1) Essential

Degree in law

Experience carrying out interviews for research purposes

Experience to work with vulnerable people and awareness of ethical issues

Familiar with key authors and issues in the field of immigration and refugee law

Ability to carry out interviews with little supervision

Able to organise and prioritise work effectively demonstrating flexibility and reliability to meet required deadlines

Able to work with integrity

Italian language mother tongue and good knowledge of English

Interest in migration and human rights

 

(2) Desirable

Currently enrolled as Ph.D. student or completed Ph.D.

Publications in the field of human rights, refugee law
