Hello EMAlum, welcome to the EMAgora!
Dear EMAlumni friends,
I am writing to share my candidacy for a position on the EMAlumni Association Board.
I’m an Egyptian human rights lawyer and researcher, working on accountability, legal reform, and human rights in authoritarian contexts. Since completing the EMA in 2022, I have continued this work while navigating the challenges of living in exile.
Over the years, I have been fortunate to connect with many human rights communities. I was a former Shelter City guest in the Netherlands, a member of ProtectDefenders.eu, and an alumnus of the Swedish Institute’s programs. During my time in exile, I have worked closely with many human rights organizations across Europe, the USA, and the MENA region, which has given me access to a broad and active network of advocates, practitioners, and researchers.
Why I’m running for the Board
The EMAlumni network is an important space for connection and collaboration. I want to give back to this community by helping to strengthen these ties, especially for alumni facing difficult situations like exile, shrinking civic space, or working under authoritarian regimes. My own experiences have shown me how crucial such networks are—not only professionally, but personally.
What I bring
-
Practical experience in legal analysis, human rights advocacy, and strategic litigation.
-
Strong ties with European, American, and MENA-based human rights organizations.
-
Experience in coalition-building and international advocacy at the UN, EU, and other global platforms.
-
A deep understanding of the challenges facing human rights defenders in exile.
-
A hands-on, pragmatic approach to projects, networking, and support initiatives.
My vision for the Association
If elected, I would like to:
-
Strengthen regional hubs and make sure alumni from restricted civic spaces feel represented and supported.
-
Promote peer-support and mentoring opportunities within the network.
-
Facilitate connections between alumni and international human rights networks for advocacy and capacity building.
-
Help the Association amplify its work by connecting with other Global Campus networks and human rights platforms.
I believe the EMAlumni Association can be a stronger, more active community that supports its members in meaningful ways. I would be proud to contribute to that mission.
Thank you for your time and support.
Warm regards,
Muhammad Ebaid
